Senna

What is it? 

A stimulant laxative, isolated from the fruit of the senna plant, used for the treatment of constipation; the active ingredients are chemicals called sennosides. It is available as tablets, granules, or a syrup and can be obtained without a prescription, but some preparations are available only from pharmacies.

Health Benefits: Senna can be beneficial for a few different purposes.

Some of these uses are:

  • Treating Constipation ( As a stimulant laxative)
  • Treating Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
  • Preparing the bowels for a colonoscopy or other diagnostic or screening procedures (as part of bowel prep)
  • Preventing pain due to straining in people with hemorrhoids or anal fissures
  • “Cleansing” the colon
  • Promoting weight loss

Common Side Effects:

  • Abdominal Pain and Cramping
  • Bloating
  • Diarrhea
  • Gas
  • Nausea

Drug Interactions: Even though it is a natural product, Senna can potentially interact with a few different medications.

  • Digoxin (Digitek®, Lanoxin®)
Also some Diuretics, such as:
  • Bumetanide (Bumex®)
  • Chlorothiazide (Diuril®)
  • Chlorthalidone (Thalitone®)
  • Ethacrynic Acid (Edecrin®)
  • Furosemide (Lasix®)
  • Hydrochlorothiazide (Esidrix®, HydroDriuril®, Microzide®, Oretic®)
  • Metolazone (Zaroxolyn®)
  • Torsemide (Demadex®)
Senna Misuse:
Senna is sometimes misused in attempts to lose weight, often by people with anorexia or bulimia. Senna overuse (especially chronic overuse) has been reported to cause serious problems, such as liver toxicity.
USE ONLY AS DIRECTED PER THE DIRECTIONS ON THE BOX, DO NOT TAKE MORE THEN THE RECOMMENDED DOSAGE TO AVOID SEVERE COMPLICATIONS TO YOUR HEALTH.
